چکیده

Anomalous x–ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma–ray repeaters (SGRs) are x–ray sources with unusual properties distinguishing them from both rotation–powered and most accretion–powered pulsars. Using archival ASCA data over the energy range 0.5 − 10.0 keV, we have studied the spectra of the persistent emission from these sources and their variation with spin-down rate. Using a single power law spectral model, we find that the overall hardness of the spectra increase with increasing spin-down rate, and therefore the spectral and spin-down mechanism are inextricably linked in these objects. In terms of the two-component blackbody plus power law spectral models, this correlation is seen as an increasing hardness of the high energy component with increasing spin-down rate, with the temperature of the low energy blackbody component remaining essentially constant. Also for the two component spectral model: the ratio of the 2 − 10 keV power law and bolometric blackbody luminosities gradually increases with the spin-down rate. We discuss these results in terms of the various theoretical models for SGRs and AXPs. Subject headings: Stars: neutron − pulsars: individual (SGRs, AXPs)

Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars: Magnetar Candidates

Baade & Zwicky (1934) were the first to envision the formation of neutron stars as the end product of a supernova explosion. Their forward thinking was not vindicated for another three decades, with the discovery of the first radio pulsars by Bell and Hewish (Hewish et al. 1968). What Baade and Zwicky could not have anticipated, however, was the menagerie of astrophysical objects that are now a...

Nature vs. Nurture: The Origin of Soft Gamma–ray Repeaters and Anomalous X–ray Pulsars

Soft gamma–ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous x–ray pulsars (AXPs) are young and radio-quiet x-ray pulsars which have been rapidly spun-down to slow spin periods clustered in the range 5− 12 s. Most of these unusual pulsars also appear to be associated with supernova shell remnants (SNRs) with typical ages < 30 kyr. By examining the sizes of these remnants versus their ages, we demonstrate that...

The strongest cosmic magnets: Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

Two classes of X-ray pulsars, the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars and the Soft Gamma–ray Repeaters, have been recognized in the last decade as the most promising candidates for being magnetars: isolated neutron stars powered by magnetic energy. I review the observational properties of these objects, focussing on the most recent results, and their interpretation in the magnetar model. Alternative explan...

v 2 2 8 N ov 1 99 9 Where Are The Young Pulsars ?

We show that young pulsars with normal magnetic fields, which are born as fast rotating neutron stars (NSs) in Type II/Ib supernova explosions, can slow down quickly by relativistic particles emission along their magnetic axis. When they slow down sufficiently, they can undergo phase transitions and collapse to strange stars, quark stars or black holes in explosions that remove a substantial fr...
